Top 6 Quitting Adderall Songs
March 15th, 2009 by Mike1. Save Me (by Shinedown)
Sample lyrics…
Someone save me if you will
And take away all these pills
And please just save me, if you can
From the blasphemy in my wasteland…I can hardly remember
The look of my own eyes
How could I love this
A life so dishonest
It made me compromiseSome one save me (x3)
Somebody save me
Somebody save me
Please don’t erase me!
My experience with this song
It was so catchy that I loved it at first, but then the lyrics started hitting too close to home. Whenever it would come on the radio, I’d switch to a different station. I wasn’t ready to be saved from my pills yet.
Now I hear it on the radio and I listen to it with quiet satisfaction. The song has no personal value to me anymore except a dull pat of accomplishment over the fact that it is about a battle I have already won.
2. New World Man (by Rush)
Sample lyrics…
He’s got a problem with his poisons.
But you know he’ll find a cure.
He is cleaning up his system.
To keep his nature pure. He’s old enough to know what’s right.
But young enough not to choose it.
Wise enough to win the world.
But fool enough to lose it.
My experience with this song
When I was on Adderall, New World Man by Rush was like a whisper of forshadowing. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I knew I would eventually have to clean up my system, and that I would do it because I wanted to keep my nature pure.
Now, I hear those lyrics and I mentally check off the part about cleaning up my system as if I’m checking off a todo list item. Now I feel somewhere in between “old enough to know what’s right” and “young enough not to choose it”. As in, I’m starting to choose the right actions I’ve known about all along. Which is encouraging.
3. Remedy (by Seether)
Sample lyrics…
Frail, the skin is dry and pale, the pain will never fail
And so we go back to the remedy
Flip the wings that get you high,
just leave them where they lie
And tell yourself, “you’ll be the death of me”
My experience with this song…
The words could really apply to any addiction. But of course, when I was on Adderall, I would apply them to that, as it was the only addiction in my life about which I would say to myself “you’ll be the death of me”.
Like Save Me by Shinedown, I liked this song at first, then had to start evading it when the lyrics started hitting to close to home.
Now I like it again. It’s a good work out song.
4. Fake It (by Seether)
Sample lyrics…
Who’s to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the wayGood god you’re coming up with reasons
Good god you’re dragging it out
Good god it’s the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down
And just fake it if you’re out of direction
Fake it if you don’t belong here
Fake it if you feel like affection
Woah you’re such a fucking hypocriteAnd you should know that the lies won’t hide your flaws
No sense in hiding all of yours
You gave up on your dreams along the way”
My experience with this song…
This song was unique for me against the others on this list in that it was the only one that hit way too close to home from the first time I listened to it. I could never listen to it.
More than a year since I’ve quit Adderall I can finally listen to this song without feeling horrifically convicted, but only after reminding myself several times that I’m not faking it anymore.
5. Doesn’t Remind Me (by Audioslave)
Sample lyrics…
“I walk the streets of Japan till I get lost
Cause it doesn’t remind me of anything
With a graveyard tan carrying a cross
Cause it doesn’t remind me of anything
I like studying faces in a parking lot
Cause it doesn’t remind me of anything
I like driving backwards in the fog
Cause it doesn’t remind me of anything”
My experience with this song
This song has absolutely nothing to do with Adderrall or the desire to quit an addiction. That’s the whole point of the song. It’s a safe song. When it was released on the radio there were so many songs I was avoiding listening to because they reminded me of issues that I didn’t want face that this song was hillarious and damning all at once…just like it was meant to be.
6. “Coma White” by Marilyn Manson
Suggested by reader Jillian, I think these lyrics earn this song a place on this list.
Sample lyrics…
A pill to make you numb
A pill to make you dumb
A pill to make you anybody else
But all the drugs in this world
Wont save her from herself
This site is encouraging me to quit once and for all. Another good song to add to this list is “Coma White” by Marilyn Manson (sample lyrics:
“A pill to make you numb
A pill to make you dumb
A pill to make you anybody else
But all the drugs in this world
Wont save her from herself”
Nice one, Jillian! Will update this post eventually with video/iTunes links and will add that song to the list.
Good list! Here is another very good one:
Senses Fail – Still Searching
Author of A.D.D.ict (The price of paying attention)
I also like
Lil Wayne “tie my hands”
Almost Alice Soundtrack is full of good stuff
“painting Flowers”
the drugs don’t work by radiohead always hits close to home
@Liv: Thanks for the suggestion! That sounds like a good one by the title. It’ll be my next iTunes purchase. 🙂
Motion City Soundtrack – Everything is Alright
Its a must!!!
After reading this…I realize some of these are songs are among my favorites and I am a music addict. Very surreal how these relate perfectly to my adhd (adderall dependence) and never even knew it.
BUCK OWENS – TIGER BY THE TAIL
I’ve got a tiger by the tail it’s plain to see
I won’t be much when you get through with me
Well I’m a losing weight and I’m turning mighty pale
Looks like I’ve got a tiger by the tail
Well I thought the day I met you you were meek as a lamb
Just the kind to fit my dreams and plans
Now the pace we’re livin’ takes the wind from my sails
And it looks like I’ve got a tiger by the tail
I’ve got a tiger by the tail…
[ guitar ]
Well every night you drag me where the bright lights’re found
There ain’t no way to slow you down
I’m about as helpless as a leaf in a gale and it looks like I’ve got a tiger by the tail
I’ve got a tiger by the tail…
List is already a little Seether-heavy, but this is my quitting song.
Rise Above This
Take the light and darken everything around me.
call the clouds and listen closely, I’m lost without you
Call your name every day when i feel so helpless
I’m fallin’ down but I’ll rise above this, rise above this
Hate the mind, regrets are better left unspoken
For all we know, this void will grow and
Everything’s in vain, distressing you though it leaves me open
Feels so right, but I’ll end this all before it gets me
Call your name every day, when i feel so helpless
I’m fallin’ down, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this
Call your name every day, when i seem so helpless
I’m fallin’ down, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this doubt
I’ll mend myself before it gets me
(I’ll mend myself before it gets me)
I’ll mend myself before it gets me
(I’ll mend myself before it gets me)
Call your name every day, when i feel so helpless
I’m fallin’ down, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this
Call your name every day, when i seem so helpless
I’m fallin’ down, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this
Forty eight ways to say that I’m feelin’ helpless
Fallin’ down, fallin down’, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this
Elliott Smith
There are no words-songs hit hard….
